‘Tobacco claims 8 lakh lives in India every year’
This was revealed by Dr CMK Reddy, senior consultant vascular surgeon at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai while interacting with mediapersons here.
Reddy was here to participate in a conference organised by the Indian Medical Association here today on the occasion of World Health Day.
Quoting from the report of World Health Organization (WHO), he said that every year about 1.5 lakh new cases of tobacco-related cancers were being detected.
Another alarming discovery was that 55,000 school children were getting hooked to tobacco every year and it was being predicted that 13 percent of all deaths by 2025 would be related to tobacco consumption.
According to him, smoking affects almost all parts of the human body and devastates it from within. One of the harmful effects of smoking and tobacco use on human health is cardio-vascular.
It increases blood pressure, heart rate, hastens hardening of arteries causing heart attacks and vascular diseases. Some vascular diseases like TAO and Bergers disease never occur in nonsmokers and so is the case with.
Smoking affects respiratory system too, causing hypoxia, chronic bronchitis and cancer among other problems. Acting on the nervous system it causes sweating, tremors, cerebral strokes and smokers are susceptible to multiple sclerosis. Besides, it causes recurrent oral ulcers, dental problems and cancer (lips, cheek, tongue, etc.), and peptic ulcers.
Smoking also causes early wrinkling of skin and delays healing of wounds, demineralises bones, reduces the density of bones and causes early osteroporosis leading to fractures. Even the immune system of the body is affected to a great extent.
Smoking by pregnant women causes premature delivery, low birth weight, affects fetal development. Recent studies say smoking leads to impotence and sperm defects in some cases. Passive smokers, especially children, too are affected.
WHO studies say that for every 10 cigarettes smoked in a day, the life span is reduced by a month and if one smokes 10 cigarettes a day for 12 years then the life is shortened by one year.
