Mumbai observes 'No Honking' day

MUMBAI: In a unique initiative to curb noise pollution, Mumbai Traffic Police is observing a 'No Honking Day' on Monday wherein motorists are asked not blow horns repeatedly on roads.

The city police's traffic department has decided to observe this day on the occasion of World Health Day as noise pollution has an impact on the health of the citizens.

The traffic department, which started the highly successful and widely emulated drive against drunk driving since last year, has roped in a host of NGOs, automobile associations, as well as schools and colleges to sensitize over 1.5 million motorists about the campaign.

Publicity material like hoardings, banners, posters and stickers have been put up across the city so that motorists abstain from honking on Monday.

Police have also tied up with local FM radio stations to promote the message.
